Keep active this summer
The festive season is in full swing and if you’re keen for to burn off those mince pies and mulled wine, we have just the answer (or 2!).
We’re truly spoilt for choice in Central Otago for things to do year-round, and summertime is no exception. The events calendar is jam-packed with sports events in particular which suit all abilities and ages – from a 5km run to a 3-day MTB event.
CENTRAL OTAGO'S SUMMER SPORTS EVENTS
We have selected our pick of local Central Otago events to keep you active during this summer season – (plus an excuse to be distracted from the family gatherings if you need one!).
With places limited at most events, you’re advised to get in early to secure your place.
- Children’s Mountain Bike Races, Naseby – 28 Dec 2020
10am registration at the sandpit (300m from the curling Rink). $5 entry. - Bannockburn MTB Classic – 30 Dec 2020
This is a great holiday cycling event with “3 races in 1” designed to cater for everyone. Starting at the Bannockburn Pub it’s a great sight to watch the field of over bikers head off ‘en-mass’.
This is a festive holiday-period ride for all classes and ages. Take to the hills around Bannockburn and enjoy the stunning scenery while participating in one of the three ride options.
Choose your distance - from 10km to 56km. Enter Here - The Gate Lake Dunstan Triathlon & Duathlon – 2 Jan 2021
A relaxed triathlon for those who are looking for a quick challenge during the holiday period swim is 300m, bike 22km and run of 5.8km starting and finishing in the same location.
For the multisporter training for C2C there is a kayak of 5.5km on flat lake, 22km bike with a 5.8km run ideal transition practice.

A 96km road cycling race travelling through Northburn, Bendigo/Tarras, Luggage, Queensberry, Lowburn and back to Cromwell. Enter Here - Wicked Northburn Rogaine – 9 Jan 2021
Rogaining is a cross-country navigation event where teams of 2 – 5 people visit as many checkpoints as they choose in the 3-hours. The checkpoints are free-choice and have different point values so strategy and route selection becomes a vital component. A form of orienteering, it combines tramping, navigation, competition, and strategy. The event caters for all levels of fitness and enthusiasm – but keep in mind this event is in the mountains, using only a map and compass, it’s a bit like a tramping treasure-hunt. 2hr to 6hr events. An epic three day Mountain Bike stage race in one of New Zealand's best MTB destinations. The race is set in the hills surrounding Alexandra, otherwise known as mountain bike heaven. Expect epic singletrack, gnarly climbs, arm pumping descents and flowing trails! Enter Here
- Northburn 100 – 20-21 Mar 2021
If you're looking to suffer - you can't get much tougher than the Northburn 100 Mile (160km) ultra-trail running race! If that's not your cup of tea then there is a range of other distances over the weekend including; 2km Kids run, 5km, 10km, 21km, 42km, 50km, and 100km. Enter Here
